Spring is Coming!
A note from your Newsletter Guru:

After a record number of days of rain here in Washington I think perhaps we are all ready for some sunny weather! Whether or not we get it is another matter. Nevertheless, we can feel it in the air and we are beginning to see it around us. We have to look a little harder this time of year, but just this morning I noticed the telltale swelling of buds on my forsythia shrub. Did I say shrub? I meant MONSTER PLANT! Yes it’s true, I am a neglectful gardener and even though I know I should trim my forsythia back each year to keep it manageable, I don’t ever do it. I’ve had great fun this winter duking it out, vying for parking space. Whatever shall I do when it bursts into bloom in a few weeks? I’ll enjoy it, that’s what. And each day I will be reminded that spring is just around the corner and that soon life will return in all its glorious color.

I look forward to the morning sun in my studio on those rare occasions that it chooses to show its face. The rarity of the sun makes it all the more sweet and wonderful when we have it. It’s fleeting and somehow miraculous and can inspire us to explore new things. For in spring, we often feel as though we are the on precipice of something really, really GREAT!

So buy those early primroses and those winter-hardy pansies. Buy that bunch of tulips at the grocery store. Force a pot of daffodils. Just remember to take a moment of your day to go out and look around. See what’s blooming, about to bloom or still in its winter slumber. Just don’t forget your raincoat.

Artists to my mind are the real architects of change, and not the political legislators who implement change after the fact.

::: William S. Burroughs :::

You come to nature with all her theories, and she knocks them all flat.

I do dream about art, and images come to me in dreams. I am definitely hoping to be in touch with my subconscious. I expect a call any minute.

January Meeting Minutes

Thank you to Mary Ann Case for taking minutes at the January 27th meeting for AC.

Sue Gill Rose and Nancy Grigsby chaired the meeting. We’ve decided on a format of business first, fun stuff later.

Laurie Piper made an announcement about the possibility of a week long show for AC in August. The dates would be August 13th-20th. It was generally decided that this was an opportunity not to be missed and that we would take it. The weather will be good, there are more tourists in town, and we could have live music and other outdoor activities. Ken Smith will be contacted and the show booked. The Spring show for AC is still on for the 28th and 29th of April with the opening party Friday the 27th and set up earlier in the week. Some voiced concern that we might be oversaturating the market, especially in light of the new week-long show in August. It was then decided that the audiences will be different enough for us to go ahead with both of these shows. It was the opinion of the group that really great advertising is going to be needed for both shows, especially the long one.

Tracy Fraker brought up the idea of possibly having a studio tour or similar event in October in lieu of our normal show. The group voted and decided not to have the October show, but to try and plan some other event, either a studio tour or something else. This topic is still open for discussion. Tracy took a list of names of those who might be interested in the Edmonds studio tour.

Sue Gill Rose made an announcement about John Herman and the parks and recreation department for Alki Beach. There is a building available for rent for artists, etc. He wanted to encourage the idea of booking 4-5 artists at a time to show in the building as well as workshops and meetings. This is especially important in the fall and winter months when tourism drops and new life is needed in the area to keep up the interest. Sue is the liaison between AC and John Herman, so please contact her for more information.

There was a call from Artists of our Mothers for a replacement artist coordinator. Duties would include attending and planning meetings, sending our calls to artists, receiving applications, being a liaison between committee members and artists, helping to select artwork, and being present during the show which takes place in May. Duties would be shared with two other volunteers. If you are interested in this position please contact Manya at divas@kindredcircle.com.

Richard Armstrong attended the meeting to announce an event to be held that evening in the ArtWorks building at 6 p.m.

Donna Watson will be speaking to our group in May of this year. More information to come!

Amy Peacock made an announcement about a new email list that is announcement only. This is a great opportunity for those of you who have trouble with the yahoo group. Please contact her at apeacock@pavoninestudios.com for more information.

Sue and Nancy then went over the survey results from November. The results were as follows:

1.) The consensus was the the AC group was enjoyable.

2.) No more meetings are needed beyond our monthly ones.

3.) More inolvement with the Edmonds Art foundation is desired.

4.) The subject of dues remains split down the middle. For now we will leave things as they are in order to avoid having to set up a treassury committee, deal with taxes etc.. If it is deemed needed in the future we will discuss it then. Publicity seems to be the main thing that we will need to spend money on.

5.) Business will be discussed first at the meetings and then we will have our demos, guest speakers etc.

6.) The purpose of the group is to encourage the artists. There will be no jurying of the shows for now.

7.) No alternate date for meetings. AC meetings will remain on one Saturday per month (the 4th Saturday unless announced) except for show months.

8.) Many expressed interest in having guest speakers and special topics.

9.) It was the concensus that we would like to sponsor events for creativity.

10.)Community outreach is also an appealing idea to many.

11.)The required two-meeting attendance in order to show work in an AC show stands.

12.)Tonnie Wolfe handed out a survey for us to fill out. It covered topics that we might like to

have discussed at future meetings. Tonnie is our temporary program director while Jonlee is away.

13.) Kathleen Johnson discussed publicity for the group. The publicity committee plans to provide the group with a rough idea of what some advertising will cost. This will be discussed further at the February meeting. Some things mentioned were additional signboards, postcards, interviews or press releases, ballots and voting for best in show to glean address/mailing info for future attendees and aquiring the EAFF mailing list. Some other ideas and opinions were discussed regarding publicity and how to fund it. Mona Fairbanks asked that some kind of advertising budget be provided.

The February meeting will be the 18th. Please note this date because it is the THIRD Saturday of the month, not the fourth. Amy and Mona will co-chair the meeting.

Seven new members were in attendance and they introduced themselves. Welcome!

Sue Robertson brought in some of her work and discussedsome of her art philosophies followed up the business side of the meeting. Sue’s talk was fun and informative. Thanks so much Sue for sharing your work and wisdom with the group!

The meeting was adjourned at about 11:30 a.m.

She juried the Edmonds Art Festival last summer. She is an in-depth speaker on why we paint and how to move to a higher and more personal place in our work. She gets to the core of creativity, I think, not just the surface result. She more or less, tells her own story. I think our artist group will find her interesting and inspiring." We look forward to hearing Donna speak.
