THE CONNECTION!

-------A Monthly Newsletter for ArtistsConnect in Edmonds, Washington------

August 2007, Vol. 2, Issue 10

Ah! Fall is in the air! I love the fall...it's such a time of peace and fresh air and ... well, you get the idea. After the hubub of summer and before the craziness of the holidays, fall seems like such a good time to start new projects.

I appreciate everyone's patience with me regarding the newsletter.  I hope to have printed newsletters available at the meeting, but hopefully the electronic version will tide you over until then.

I am excited about the upcoming November show and I hope you are too! I will once again be doing the Miniature auction because it was such a big hit in July! And once again all AC members are invited to submit a piece. Details are forthcoming.  Also, the fairy door project sounds like so much fun. I must get started on mine soon... Why DO I procrastinate so?

So, back to fall... Fall makes me want to nest. Does it do that to you too? Right now I am trying to find my three boxes of embroidery floss so that I have some 'in front of the TV' projects for the winter. I want to do a seriously cleanup of my storage areas and my studio. I want to get out the pumpkin spice scented candles!

Please enjoy our featured artist for this month - Cindy McConnell!

See you at the meeting!

--Amy Peacock

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MEETING FOR SEPTEMBER IS SEPTEMBER 29th!

August Meeting Minutes

Minutes are forthcoming...I hope...

This might be a good time to please with AC members. I really really REALLY need someone to take minutes for me for the newsletter and so that we have a record of the things that were discussed and the activities we engaged in. Minutes are beneficial to those who came to the meetings and those who miss them. Please help me out.

Miscellaneous Announcements

2007 AC Show Dates Announced!

Holiday show: November 14 (setup day) thru 18.

2006-2007 AC Meeting dates:
Oct 27; Nov 24; Dec 22.

Your newsletter needs your help! Donations of $1 are appreciated! Your dollar goes to defray expenses such as postage, printing, and envelopes. Thank you!

Future ideas for programs should be directed to Tonnie Wolfe.

We have a great program this month!  Darlene Lucas will present "The Joys of Commissions."  She will present her process for completing a commission and will use her current project as an example.  I know it will be informative.

From Cheryl Hufnagel: We are still in need of one or two people to coordinate refreshments for our AC meetings. Two people volunteered at the last meeting to do it: now one can't do it, but Diane Korf still can. She wants to assist only. If one or two people would like to share the responsibility of coordinator, that would be great. I can walk them through it the next two months.

If you would like to do this, please either e-mail me or call and leave a message at 206-361-5124. If I don't hear from anyone, I will arrive at the usual time for the meeting instead of early to help with the refreshments.

MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENTS:

From Sue Robertson:
Sue will  be showing figurative abstract work in Espresso American at the Everett Library from August 31 through October 15th.
I will be participating in an open studio at the studio of Patricia Seggebruch in Snohomish on Oct. 20.

Are you struggling to commit to your art? Looking for a studio away from home, but can't afford the $400+/month rent? Maybe you just want to hang out with other artists while you work - and share ideas. I'm looking for a few artsy folks to meet at my north Edmonds house once or twice a week. Available days and evenings are Monday, Wednesday, and possibly Friday. Whoever joins will have a say about the details - the hours, refreshments, or money donations. Let's start making art a priority. Please contact Melinda Terry at (425) 741-3504 if you're interested in meeting regularly in an [almost] studio setting. Several have contacted Melinda about studio options (and arranging regular meet-ups). An after-the-meeting discussion for those interested is planned for Saturday the 29th.

ArtistsConnect is now an official fundraising partner with CM Travel. AC has earned over $100 so far in contributions! Thank you to those of you who have scheduled travel through Kelly Tissot. She is an active member of Artists Connect and works as a travel consultant. Artists Connect gets a percentage of the agency's commission, and you receive excellent customer service at a "meet or beat" internet price.

Puget Sound Artists' Gift Show applications are now being accepted. This is a juried gift show featuring local artists hosted by Barbara Childs, Saturday, November 17 from 10 - 4 at the Edmonds Anderson Center. There is a $25 fee for a 6'x3' space and 20% of gross sales. This is the sale's eighth year. It is held down the hall from the Edmonds Scupture's Workshop sale that is held the same weekend. For more information, please contact Barb at childspottery@comcast.net.

Pam Harold's painting "Solitude" was chosen to be one of seventy paintings to be exhibited at the Women Painters of Washington Open Inauguaral Show at the WA State Trade and Convention Center, Seattle WA June 29 - Sept 25, 2007.

Jacqui Beck's class: Getting Unstuck and Moving Forward in Your Art and Life 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday October 23rd Tuition is $35, Columbia City Gallery To Register: contact Jacqui (325-7267; jbeck@blarg.net) or http://www.seedseattle.org/seedarts/ccg
Jacqui Beck's article about her work, "A Metaphor for Life," is in the September issue of Artist's Magazine, www.artistsmagazine.com

Alice Owen will be showing paintings at the Walnut Street Coffee Shop, Edmonds, beginning Oct. 18, Art Walk, thru Nov. 14, and at the Karlson/Gray Gallery, Langley (Whidby Island) from mid-October till mid-November. (Date a little indefinite because of remodeling). This was formerly the Gaskill/Olson gallery.

From Barbara Wyatt: The A board committee for the November needs 2 people to put out A boards each morning and collect them each evening.  Last year Mike O'day and Bill Ray did the entire sale, which is alot to ask.  I think if 2 people did it for 2 days (Thurs/Friday and Saturday/Sunday a 2nd team)- would work well. Someone who has a van, and lives close to the AC building would work well. One person drives, another sets them on location in downtown Edmonds/retriving that evening. Also if someone wants to blow up balloons a day or two (to attach to the signs) I need another person for that duty.  If you have already signed up to be a greeter, according to Bill, not everyone with that request will be needed. Thanks in advance for your help,

Fran and Darlene Lucas will have a booth at the "Best of the Northwest" show November 16-17 and 18 at Magnuson Park-Sandpoint in Seattle. It is a juried show with very high quality art and craft.

Julie Scandora is  exhibiting in The Gallery on Bainbridge Island at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts from October 5 through the end of the month.  It's a group show, "Duets," in which artists have been paired and each pair has selected a theme She is with Colleen Mecham, a photographer, and our theme is "Atmospheric Impressions."

Colette Laico was juried into the National Collage Society show at Cornell Museum in Delray Beach, FL. Show runs Sept 13-Oct. 29. She also has a solo show at the university Unitarian Church Gallery in Seattle during the month of November.

There will be a call for help from the AC membership to fill positions 6-8 above. Samantha volunteered to write job descriptions to assist in this. Help is also needed for the following assignments:

    • Assist Yenny in keeping in touch (face-to-face) with Edmonds Merchants for MDT
    • Purchasing research/bid information for Splash postcards

Collateral Materials

It was decided to print the following quantities of each of the collateral materials:

    • MDT Passport - 3000 (2X the number printed for July show)
Called a flyer during Salmon Run--this is the card that is placed in each of the sponsoring merchant locations and will also be available for AC members to handout.
The higher quantity is to prevent the merchants from running short and to provide something for members who prefer to handout rather than mail info.
    • Post Cards - 2500
This will expand the AC mailing list by 800, plus allow AC show members to sign up for 10 at the Sept. meeting (or online afterward). More can be requested if needed. Mail date: 11/1
    • Posters - 200
AC show participants will each be asked to hang 3 posters in work locations, condo bulletin boards or places unique to them. This is in addition to the public placement handled by the Field Marketing/Distribution committee. The committee decided to ask members to give feedback where they placed their posters so exposure could be tracked.

    • Art Splash - Nov. 15-18
    • Mystical Door Drawing - Dec. 8

FEATURED ARTIST:

CINDY McCONNELL

Cindy McConnell's fiber art features both fiber sculpture and "paintings". The "thread painting" begins with a fabric base and has at least seven layers of varied length criss crossing stitches covering the surface. She uses silk, cotton, rayon and synthetic fabrics for the base and stitches by hand in silk, cotton, rayon, mylar, metallic and linen threads. These floral fiber paintings are inspired by her garden. The sculptured containers are made of commercially dyed silks and handwoven fabrics. Each one is richly embellished with hand and machine stitching, beading, ribbons and found treasures.

Cindy says that she has always had to make things. Even as a very young child she can remember having a box of "making stuff" - scissosrs, glue, paper, paint, color crayons. In subsequent years her fascination with fabric and thread, and the tactile qualities they hold, has endured. They have taken a variety of forms but have consistently used in her projects. Her mother taught her to sew at an early age. Most of her work has evolved from experimentation with different techniques. Of special interest to her are containers - boxes, envelopes, and bags - meant to hold something special inside.

As a newer member of AC, her boundaries have been stretched to include being in the most recent July sale. It's been a great advantage to be part of a group of artists who use different mediums to do their expressing and to be surprised when a spark of an idea taken from a program grows into a finished piece.
