Cheryl’s love of art began in early childhood. She would sit for hours, drawing, painting and making greeting cards.

At Shoreline Community College, Cheryl studied drawing, 2-dimensional design and art history. In 1993 she discovered pastelist Doug Dawson’s book, Capturing Light and Color with Pastel, and began experimenting with pastels. Since then, she has worked almost exclusively in pastels and has studied with several notable pastelists including Dorisjean Colvin, PSA, Susan Ogilvie, PSA, Clark Elster, NPS-DP and Ned Mueller, NPS-DP. She also visits museums and galleries, and reads art books and magazines to study the work of other artists, past and present.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Painting is one of the greatest joys of my life. A life-long resident of the Seattle area, I am awed and inspired by the beauty that surrounds me in the Pacific Northwest or wherever I travel. Each day brings a uniqueness that compels me to paint, and to do so as best I can with the abilities that God has given me. I hope to convey a sense of peace and joy to viewers, and a desire to experience in actuality what they are looking at: the sunlit landscape, silky cat, fragrant bouquet.

The enticement of color and interplay of light and shadow captivate my attention. I paint what I love or what moves me at the moment. With pastels, I can achieve brilliant color and a variety of application techniques. Whatever my subject matter, pastels give me the freedom and immediacy to capture a motif and translate my excitement about it into a painting. Each piece can take on a life all its own and turn out differently than I imagined, surprising me! The process is ever changing, and keeps me intrigued, growing and motivated to continually exceed my grasp.
