THE CONNECTION!

SHOWTIME!

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am pretty excited about the upcoming show for ArtistsConnect! ARTSplash is going to be our best show yet! I mean, we have great sponsors, great art, money for our budget and teams of really great volunteers! How can we go wrong? I firmly believe that if we team up, there is no limit to what AC can accomplish! In fact, I can hardly wait for November! Of course, I hope to have new pieces for that show...if I can just find the time to paint!

I had been looking forward to the letter I woud receive from Artist Trust (remember Julie Scandora’s talk a few months back?) letting me know if I did or did not get a grant. Sadly, I did not get the grant. But applying for it was good experience and I will definitely apply next year. I think I had really hoped that I would get it so that I could point to something concrete (everyone understands money, right?) and say to my friends and family, "See! I got money! Someone out there thinks I have potential!" That kind of need for validation is tricky in the best of circumstances. Perhaps I will still do my project, just without the benefit of grant money. We’ll see.

At any rate, I am still looking forward to the show and being able to chat with my fellow artists for a bit longer that I get to at meetings. It often seems that people come and go and I am doing good to check them in at the door. Being able to connect is important to me, and I am really hoping to get to know some of our new members a little better too. Until the show...

--Amy Peacock

Featured Artist - Helen Drummond

What got me to painting? As a 9 year old I brought a drawing home of a fox that my 4th grade teacher had us copy from her drawing on the blackboard. (yes, I’m old enough to have used blackboards.) Art education in my school consisted of copying, if the teacher did anything with us at all. Anyway, my parents were impressed with my drawing, so they found a woman in town who taught oil painting and took my brother and me to her house every Saturday. She taught in her garage and had us copy pictures. We did learn color mixing and had help with the drawing. I think I did this for about two years. I still have 3 of the 5 paintings I did then and am impressed now at what I could do.

Back then I had no idea of my strengths, though, and decided that I could only copy and would never amount to anything. So time went on, I studied History in College, got my teaching credential, and taught Elementary School for several years. Then I married, had two children, went back to school for a music credential and taught band.

After having had a career as a music teacher, I realized that I needed to follow my passion. That passion was and is oil painting. What started as an avocation quickly became a "late-in-life" profession. Landscape is my main milieu although I love playing with abstract images. As a child I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, then moved to Seattle a young adult. I have always loved nature; climbing trees, going to the mountains, and to the ocean, all to satisfy my need for spiritual renewal. Landscape, like music, is something that moves me beyond myself. Landscapes elicit the emotion that I feel in response to what I see.

The Pacific Northwest is the subject of most of my paintings. However, I have driven across the US many times, traveled in Mexico, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, England, India, and Canada. My work is in collections in this country as well as Australia and India. Memories of my travels often help me change an image to fit a particular composition as I work on completing a painting. Everywhere I am, I respond to landscape, especially trees, which has led me to be called "The Painter of Trees" by fellow artists and gallery executives.

June Meeting Minutes

A big thank you to Paula Perez for taking the minutes this month!

Cheryl Waale opened the meeting. She asked us to remember to support Amy Peacock’s newsletter with our donations and thanked her for her work on the newsletter, name badges, and website. We welcomed new members: Tom Newitt, who works in "all media except oil," Melinda Terry, a retired middle-school teacher who works in mixed media, and Georgia Jensen, who owns Laughing Hands Studio in Lake Forest Park and was invited by Helen Drummond.

Bill Butler gave a show update. The work assignments, show list, rules for show, and show guidelines are all online at the AC website. Sally is in charge of the rules. Refreshments are on the show list too, for those who signed up to bring them. As a reminder for new members, the ArtSplash show is on Thursday, July 19 to Sunday, July 22. Whitney is in charge of set up, which is 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18th, with artists to bring their own art to hang from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Whitney can arrange a later hanging time for you if you work, but please speak to him. The reception is Friday night. Bill said there will probably be extra space available, due to cancellations of artists’ reserved spaces and their vacation schedules, so the classroom space may be open to more artwork on Saturday and Sunday of the show. Each artist will have a pre-assigned 4’ by 4’ area to hang in, with spaces assigned by lottery on Wednesday. Each artist will hang their own art in their space. Amy Peacock will make mounted name labels for all the artists to keep the look consistent. You will need individual labels for your pieces, with inventory numbers. Each artist will be allowed one print bin or table at their space – not excessive, please!

Amy Peacock spoke about the miniatures auction at the show. She will let us know about the starting bids and "buy now" prices. The auction is open for contributions from all AC members, and she has about 25 entries so far. Miniatures are defined as smaller than 6" in height, width, and depth. This is a fundraiser, with the Foundation receiving 25% and the artist 75%. It will be advertised in the media.

Tonnie Wolfe announced that Jonlee Nunn is resigning from the Program Committee and that she would like our input as far as upcoming program ideas, or volunteering to share with the group ourselves. August’s program will be a critique session for artists. Sue Robertson suggested that we have a program devoted to our histories. Another AC member suggested that we group that discussion by media into small groups. Tonnie mentioned that outside speakers are not paid, but the AC will "pass the hat" to reimburse them for gas expenses.

Samantha Saether told us that postcards and posters for the ArtSplash show are available today for pickup at the table, and will be available at Autumn’s Framing after the meeting. Yenny Broadie discussed popularity of the Salmon Run promotion and said that they plan to use the Salmon Run again as the summer ArtSplash promotion. The sponsors and the public were very excited about the salmon. She discussed a promotion for the future November ’07 show: fairy doors! Modeled after a project started by an artist in Ann Arbor, Michigan, it will be a "magical idea" linked to the holiday season without being exclusively "Christmassy." She is thinking of having 30-40 doors decorated for sponsors to display, and she displayed three different model doors to the AC as examples. She will present the idea to the Downtown Edmonds Organization in August. The fairy doors would be ready for artists to pickup in mid-August, with a mid-October deadline to finish them. They would be shown for two weeks, and there would be a party and reception, and then the merchants would take each door to their shops. The doors would cost $10 each for the artists.

After a break, the program on Digital Art began at 11:00. The discussion panel included AC’s Tom Nunn and Tonnie Wolfe, and also artists Susie Howell and Henk Dawson. Questions discussed by the panel included, "Why Digital Art?" "How did you start in Digital Art?" "Where do you get your inspiration?" and "What is your process of creation?"

The ArtistsConnect meeting was dismissed  at 12:05 p.m.
